Matthew Mulvaney * 25 March 1840 Kildare, Ireland + 8 May 1892 Cincinnati, Ohio, USA oo, Margaret Mary Ellen Hopkins
More questions exist around Matthew Mulvaney than answers. In researching his line and descendants many confusing discoveries have been made. Confusion around his parents, birthdate, immigration (From Ireland and/or Canada), local relatives in the 1860s and many questions around his wife's name. Below is a compilation of my "educated guesses" and some facts
Birth Year
- 1832, Ireland - US Civil War Registration records
- According to cemetery stone born 25 March 1840
- 1880 Census lists age in 1880 of 40yo
Parents
- Cemetery records at St Joseph New Cemetery list mother as “Bridget” and father as “Jas” which stands for James
- No other records about his parents have been found.
- Cemetery records also list birthplace as Kildare, Ireland
Immigration
All evidence points to immigration to the US after some time in Canada about 1863.
Wife/Marriage
There is a fair amount of confusion around the name of Matthew’s wife. I suspect her name was Margaret Hopkins but am confused by the 1880 census record listing wife as Ellen.
- Ellen Mulvaney: 1880 Census 40 yo, born Ireland
- Margaret Hopkins: Death Certificate of daughter Mary Mulvaney, Ireland
- Cemetery records from St. Joseph New Cemetery list several children death parents as Matthew and Margaret
- Baptismal Records of children list mother as Margaret Hopkins
Family:
Information about Matthew’s family has been obtained from Church, church records and census records. The 1900 Census (living with Mary and John Joseph Flynn) says they had 13 kids, only 5 were still alive in 1900. I have only founds records on 12 kids, 8 living in 1880, 4 living in 1900)

Occupation
Matthew was a shoemaker. The 1880 census stated that he worked in a Boot Factory. Multiple other records and directories document that he was a shoemaker.
Military
I do not believe that Matthew was involved in the military. I have found a Matthew Mulvaney in the US Civil War Draft Registration documents that was “subject to do military duty" in the First Congressional District in Hamilton County. I am not sure if this is our Matthew but the profession is correct. The birth year suggests 1832 in Ireland.
Death/Burial
The most helpful information about Matthew has come from his death and burial records. He died of pneumonia on 8 May 1892, funeral was at St. Xavier Church in Cincinnati and is buried at St. Joseph New Cemetery in a plot of many of his relatives.
St. Joseph New Cemetery Records provide tremendous information including:
